dental implants in north york ontarioHave you recently undergone the surgery for dental implants in North York Ontario? If so, you’ve just made a big investment in your oral and overall health. Now you need to focus on caring for your implants to make sure they stay strong, healthy, and last a lifetime. To help you maintain excellent oral health with your dental implants, we’ve put together a list of do’s and dont’s for implant care.

Dental Implant Care: The Do’s

When cared for properly, dental implants can be expected to last for the wearer’s lifetime. Do follow this advice and you’ll likely enjoy your stable tooth replacement for years and years to come.

When it comes to taking care of your dental implants, DO…

  • Follow your implant dentist’s and dental hygienist’s advice carefully
  • Visit your dentist in North York Ontario as recommended for periodic checkups (usually every three months)
  • Let your dentist know as soon as you experience pain, bleeding, or looseness in a dental implant
  • Watch out for redness and swelling near a dental implant, as these can indicate peri-implantitis, an inflammatory condition that affects the health of the implant
  • Brush teeth daily, using a brush with tapered bristles to reach beneath the gum line
  • Clean between teeth using an interdental brush or dental floss

Dental Implant Care: The Dont’s

There are some things you should never, ever, ever do when caring for your dental implants. To enjoy proper dental implant function and solid oral health, make sure you DON’T…

  • Use metal objects to clean between teeth or under the gumline. Pipe cleaners, paper clips, hard brushes, and other metal tools can harm the dental implant.
  • Scratch the dental implant, as this causes plaque and bacteria buildup that leads to dental implant failure
  • Ignore proper care of a removable prosthetic device. Clean dentures daily
  • Smoke or use tobacco, as the substance is a leading cause of dental implant failure in otherwise healthy patients
  • Ignore the signs of gum disease: swollen, red, tender, bleeding gums

How To Know If You’re Taking Proper Care of Your Dental Implants

When you stay on top of your recommended visits to the dentist, we can evaluate your at-home dental care and provide important patient education as needed. During this regular visit, we’ll be on the lookout for areas you’re not cleaning well enough, and help you understand how to prevent plaque and bacteria buildup for healthier teeth, gums, and dental implants that last a lifetime.
