January 5, 2015

Your teeth and gums see plenty of use throughout the day, eating and drinking at mealtimes and when your afternoon snack craving hits. Even if you are brushing your teeth twice per day and flossing at least once, your mouth still needs professional attention twice per year. With teeth cleanings and routine checkups in North York, Ontario, Dr. Eli Shem-Tov can help you keep your pearly whites shining brightly all year round. Our preventive dentistry checkups may also help you avoid damage to not only your teeth and gums, but to the rest of your body as well.

The Importance of Routine Checkups and Cleanings

Routine teeth cleaning visits to our North York dental office actively help keep your teeth and gums safe from some of the most common oral health concerns, including tooth decay and periodontal disease. When left untreated, tooth decay can lead to damage to other teeth and infections within the bone tissue that comprises the jaw. Advanced periodontal disease has been linked to a variety of systemic health problems, including heart disease, stroke, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, preterm birth, and more. Fortunately, these two potentially severe oral health conditions are easily prevented with proper home hygiene and regular checkups at North York Dental.

For the majority of healthy children and adults, dental checkups and cleanings need only be performed twice per year, or once every six months. In cases of periodontal disease, regular checkups and deep cleanings may be recommended more frequently.

Introducing Invisalign: The Invisible Way to Straighten Teeth

May 23, 2014

North York Dental would like to introduce you to the innovative method of straightening your teeth – this is Invisalign. Let us explain. In the past for straightened teeth, one would have to wear ugly braces, which would plug into the grid of your teeth and often be a source of ridicule. With Invisalign, one gets the confidence of a better smile while letting your kids enjoy their lives with a new and innovative method for straightening teeth.

We will work with you to create a customized series of aligners meant for you and you only. These aligner trays are crafted from smooth, comfortable, and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. They are clear and unlike the old metal braces, they blend into the grid of the mouth rather than serve to draw attention to it. This is how Invisalign got its’ name – invisible aligners.

Wearing these aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place based off the exact movements that North York Dental will plan out for you. There aren’t any metal brackets to attach, no wires to tighten, and they are replaced every two weeks until treatment is complete. You simply remove the old aligners and pop in the new pair every two weeks, and at the end of treatment, Invisalign and North York Dental will allow you to achieve a great smile with little interference into your personal life. Most people won’t even be able to tell that you’re in the process of straightening your teeth.

North York Dental is able to provide this service to our patients which can treat mild to difficult dental problems and correct a wide variety of dental problems.

Gapped teeth can occur with abnormal growth of the jawbone. This can lead to gum problems due to a lack of protection by the teeth with an increase in periodontal or gum disease. Invisalign can fix that

Overjet or what is more commonly known as “overbite” is created when the upper teeth bite over the lower teeth. Invisalign can fix that. Underbite is the opposite when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth. Invisalign can fix that.

Open bite when some teeth aren’t making physical contact with their opposing teeth for a proper bite, an overly crowded set of teeth, and a crossbite that occurs when the upper and lower jaws are misaligned – Invisalign fixes them all! North York Dental has begun using Invisalign for all of these reasons as it has proven to be a very effective form of dental repair and a revolutionary procedure unseen in the dental profession before.

With North York Dental, achieve a properly aligned set of teeth that, from our experience, means the world to a patient that has never had a confident smile before. Straightened teeth can significant affect your overall dental health, which is the ultimate goal for us at North York Dental. Don’t hesitate to contact North York Dental during business hours to inquire about more information on Invisalign.

The comfortable and clear aligners will gently guide you towards a beautiful smile without the unsightly brackets and wires. Talk to us today to find out how North York Dental can help you get there.

Our Dentists Will Help Prevent Gum Disease

May 16, 2014

Our mouths are full of harmful bacteria which when combined with mucus and other particles form a sticky, colorless plaque that rest on our teeth. Brushing and flossing help rid ourselves of this plaque however plaque that isn’t removed may then harden. This forms a type of tartar that a toothbrush cannot clean. This is the origination of gum disease, which thousands of Canadians suffer from every year.

Periodontal disease or gum disease can be as simple as gum inflammation or can turn into a serious disease that results in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In the worst of cases, teeth may be lost.

At North York Dental, we understand that your health not only depends on your teeth but on the well being of your gums as well. We don’t want to see you have to lose your teeth because of gum disease or worse. Recent studies across the country have shown that people who have gum disease are at greater risk for more serious problems, such as heart disease or diabetes.

Dr. Shem-Tov and our team of trained professionals will work with you to properly address your gum disease and work to stop it in its’ tracks. We offer in office therapy with Atridox Injectable Antibiotic as well as minor gum surgery should either of these options be necessary for your treatment.

There many risk factors that play into whether gum disease may be in a person’s future. Smoking is one of the most significant risk factors associated with the development of gum disease. The hormonal changes often found in women, diabetes, certain over-the-counter medication that cause a reduction in saliva flow, and there’s genetic susceptibility – these are all common risk factors associated with gum disease.

Gum disease is commonly developed when the plaque we outlined above begins to build up along and underneath the gum line. Typically signs of this aren’t visible until individuals are in their 30s or 40s.

The best way to guard against gum disease is to keep your teeth and gums healthy through brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride based toothpaste, flossing to remove plaque from between the teeth, and by visiting the dentist regularly for a professional cleaning.

Symptoms include bad breath that won’t go away, red or swollen gums, tender or bleeding gums, painful chewing, loose teeth, sensitive teeth, or receding gums or longer appearing teeth. If you have one or more of these symptoms then there is a large possibility that you are in the midst of developing a form of gum disease if you don’t already have it.

At North York Dental, we can work with you to take preventative measures to ensure that this doesn’t escalate into a more serious problem. We have written materials that we distribute among our patients to assist them in their education on the condition, We will work to ensure that it is properly diagnosed and that it is treated immediately.

Don’t let it go untreated. We can help. Contact North York Dental today to get an assessment on your teeth to find out if you’re at risk for developing gum disease in your future.

Dental Implants: The Procedure and Benefits

May 9, 2014

The ability of dentists to use dental implants has revolutionized the care and treatment of a wide range of dental needs. A dental implant basically is an artificial tooth that is anchored in your mouth and is used to support false teeth to replace missing or damaged ones. Dental implants are commonly used by people who have lost one or two teeth for any number of reasons but who have otherwise healthy teeth.

Endosteal (in the bone): This type of implant is by far the most common. With this sort of set up, each individual implant that is secured into the jaw bone holds the prosthetic teeth that are used to replace the missing ones. This style of implant is common with patients who have partial bridges already or those who have removable dentures.

Subperiosteal (on the bone): These types of implants are generally used for those who cannot use Endosteal implants and they are placed on top of the jaw. They are secured in place with metal framework and a series of posts poke through the gums and are used to hold the replacement teeth.

The process of replacing missing teeth is a team effort that involves you, your dentist, and the oral surgeon who will be performing the procedure. You will work together to determine what is the best course of action for you and what will work best for you right now and in the long term. There are three basic procedures that can be done:

Single Tooth Replacement – If only a single tooth is missing, one implant with the accompanying tooth crown can replace it and fill the gap.

Several Teeth Replacement – If several teeth are missing in a row that need to be replaced, implant-supported bridges or a set of false teeth that are fused together and secured as one solid piece can replace them.

Total Teeth Replacement – If all of your teeth are missing or need to be removed, then you will be going with full bridge work or dentures to replace the teeth.

As is the case with your real teeth, oral care and hygiene go a long way in keeping your teeth and mouth healthy. Just because you have implants does not mean you can ignore their care. You must still brush and floss and care for the implants as you would your regular teeth. This keeps them looking great and working as they should.

Advantages Of Hiring A Family Dentist

April 25, 2014

There are many common fears people have about going to the dentists. However the benefits you gain from having a family dentist far outweigh the often irrational fears that may exist. It is time to realize that you should not be afraid of the dentist and here are some common fears and why they should not stop you from getting the care that you and your family needs.

1 Fear of the instruments used vs getting the right treatment

Sometimes, what freaks people out about going to the dentist is the equipment used. Drills, scrapers, needles, they all seem so terrifying. One thing that can help patients overcome this fear is to talk with the dentist about the tools and equipment that will be used. Your dentist wants to help you keep your mouth healthy and keep you pain-free, so learning to feel comfortable around these instruments can go a long way in helping you feel relaxed and letting the dentist do his or her job.

2. Fear of the dentist vs  trusting the dentist

It is not always the case but often times dentists are very down to earth and serious. This can come across as being uncaring, cold, or harsh – which makes feelings of uneasiness even greater. But you need to remember that some people just come across that way and it is nothing personal. Your family dentists is the person you turn to for your oral care and they are the ones who can help you when something goes wrong – from a loose tooth to cavities to oral injuries. It is important to have a good family dentist on call that you feel comfortable with and can trust.

3. Fear of the pain vs relieving the pain

No one likes to feel pain. Even with local anesthesia, there can still be pressure and discomfort. And if you have a phobia of needles, getting the shot of anesthesia can be bad enough. It can help to talk to the dentists about your fears and concerns. Most family dentists know people have these fears and there are things they can do to help you through these times and overcome the fear. The pain you face from neglected oral issues can far outweigh the slight discomfort of having the work done.

4. Fear of the unknown vs being in the know

Humans by nature fear change and the unknown. Going to a dentist and not knowing what they will find or what work may need to be done is perhaps the most terrifying thing about the visit. Talk to your dentists about what needs to be done, what can be done, what you want to have done, and make sure you take an active part in the process. It can help alleviate some of that uncertainty and lessen the fear. When you talk to the dentist you can see how much they do care about you, your family and your dental needs.

Choosing the Right Dental Care Clinic for Your Family’s Dental Needs

January 22, 2014

What Kind of Dentist is Best?
Not all dentists have the same services and can provide the same care for you and your family. Doing a little research can make this process much easier and help reduce the amount of time you will have to spend looking for the right dentist. If you need surgery search for one the will do oral surgeries and if you have kids, make sure the dentist you choose is comfortable working with kids.

Check the Credentials
Advertisements and web pages can say anything so you need to make sure you check all references that are given and do your research to make sure all information given is accurate and up to date.

Check Insurance Acceptance and Payment Options
No dentist or dental procedure will do you much good if you can’t afford to pay for it. In tough economic times it is important to make sure your insurance policy is accepted by your dentist. If you do not have insurance you need to make sure what payment plans are available so you can pay and get your work done.

Location and Hours
No matter how great a dentist is, if you cannot make it to the office during office hours, it is not much of a benefit to you. Be sure you see what the office hours of operation are and take the time to figure out if you will be able to make appointments with your normal schedule for work, school, or family activities.

Drop By for a Visit
Stopping by the office for a surprise visit can be a great source of insight. Check to see what the office is like, how clean and well organized it is. Everything can seem fine, but a face to face visit and talk with the dentist or staff can be the final deciding factor.

Set Up A Consultation
When you stop by for a visit, check with the receptionist for a time when you can have a consultation with the dentist. Many offices offer the first meeting for free or at a reduced price. See what the policy is and what options are available for you.

Check for Additional Services
Make sure you check with your new dentists to see what other services they offer. What is the policy for x-rays, cleanings, fillings, crowns, and surgeries? Getting this information beforehand can help you make plans and make your final decision in an informed way.

Find Out the Waiting List for an Appointment
One of the biggest problems people have when they are searching for a new dentist is the wait time. Some dentists have only a certain period of time where they can take new clients. The waiting list for new patients can be quite long sometimes and this can be very frustrating, especially when you are looking for a dentist because of a medical emergency. So start now and don’t wait until you actually need a dentist.

How to Take Care of Your Brand New Porcelain Veneers

January 10, 2014

How do I take care of veneers? This is a common question many dental patients have and it is an important question that needs to be answered. After going through it all and paying for the new veneers it is important to know how to take care of them. These are just some of the tips you need to keep in mind so you can keep your veneers looking bright and new and beautiful.

Avoid Certain Food and Beverages
Some foods and drinks really need to be avoided when possible so they do not mess up your porcelain veneers. Drinks like coffee, tea, and red wine and foods like chocolate, citrus, and soda can stain or erode your veneers. It is not logical to expect people to avoid these foods totally, but it is important to limit their consumption and to try and clean your veneers after eating such foods.

Avoid Abrasive Toothpastes
For teeth, abrasive toothpaste and those with harsh cleaners and whiteners can work well. However, with veneers, these can damage the surface and destroy the look and appearance of the veneers you spent so much time and money on. Stuck with regular toothpaste or those that are designed for use with dental implants such as veneers. To further take care of your new smile without causing any damage, use a soft bristle toothbrush each time, every time.

Clean Properly
Unless you are given other directions by your dentists, you should use general oral hygiene with your veneers. You will still need to brush and floss just as you would with your regular teeth. Mouthwash can also help keep the veneers looking bright and clean. Talk with your dentist to make sure you fully understand how to take care of your new veneers and keep them looking great.

Protect Your Mouth
Just as you would take care to protect your mouth from injury you need to be just as careful with the veneers. If you play sports or engage in any activities where you might get hit in the mouth or otherwise damage your mouth, then take care and take the necessary precautions to protect your veneers.

Veneers are becoming more and more popular, along with the technology, but even the best veneers need a little TLC to keep them looking great for years to come. Take care of your veneers and keep looking sharp!
