Your North York, Ontario family dentist urges his patients to floss daily

July 20, 2015

ThinkstockPhotos-482744025Flossing helps prevent accumulation of tartar, and also gum disease, cavities and bad breath. In addition to regular exams and cleanings, North York, Ontario family dentist Dr. Eli Shem-Tov recommends daily practice of this simple at-home hygiene discipline for children and adults of all ages.

Dentists across North America agree that preventive dental care is more than oral examinations, x-rays and hygienic cleanings. Dr. Eli Shem-Tov, family dentist of North York Dental teaches patients that while in-office care is indispensable, brushing and often neglected flossing are key to a dazzling, long-lasting smile.

Get a check-up with your dentist in North York, Ontario twice a year

The Canadian Dental Association maintains that twice yearly check-ups and cleanings promote excellent oral health and catch any developing problems at their earliest stage. During an oral exam, Dr. Shem-Tov:

 inspects teeth for signs of decay and gums for periodontal disease
 performs periodontal probing to assess the depth of gum pockets
 looks at restorations such as fillings, crowns, fixed bridgework for signs of breakdown
 sees how teeth bite together
 does a fast and painless oral cancer assessment

The hygienist scales plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces and at the gum line to prevent decay and gum disease. She also polishes the teeth for a shiney clean. Check-ups and cleanings provide the dental care provider and patient opportunity to discuss concerns, treatment goals and the best way to take care of teeth and gums at home.

Carryover hygiene to the home

Besides twice daily brushing, your best dentist in Toronto, Ontario wants all his patients, both children and adults, to floss their teeth daily. Whether using waxed or plain floss, thin or thick, the important thing is consistency. Flossing every day removes bacteria-laden plaque and food residue from between the teeth, reducing the chances of tooth decay and gum disease (periodontitis).

Gum disease loosens teeth and leads to puffy, red infected gums. In its worst stages, gum disease causes tooth loss, and gum and bone recession. Overall health worsens, too, as research indicates that periodontitis plays a role in heart disease, stroke, dementia, pregnancy complications and a host of other serious health issues.

So, here’s how to floss:

1. Unwind an 18” length of floss from the dispenser. Wrapping one end around the middle or index finger of each hand, pull the floss taut between your thumbs.
2. Starting on the top arch, gently move the floss back and forth between each tooth. The key word here is “gently,” because you don’t want to cut or abrade tender gum tissue with the floss.
3. Work your way between all teeth, top and bottom. Pay extra attention to the very back molars on each arch. Move the floss with up and down strokes to thoroughly clean the interdental spaces.
4. Rinse your mouth well with water.

Research indicates that some people floss before they brush their teeth, and others floss after brushing. The timing doesn’t seem to matter as long as you floss carefully each day.

What Causes Discoloration?

There are numerous reasons why your tooth enamel may become stained or discolored. Some of the most common factors are drinking coffee or tea, consuming foods and beverages with high acidity or color, and even the passage of time. All teeth are uniquely shaded, but there are two layers that can be stained the enamel and the dentin layer. Enamel stains are what we most often think of stains caused by high acid, sugar, or colored foods and beverages, but over time, the inner dentin layer of your tooth can become stained and it darkens naturally as we age showing through the thin enamel. When this happens, it is more difficult to remove stains effectively.

Because of the discoloration that occurs naturally no matter how careful we are with our teeth, it is likely that they will begin to look dull as we age. At home whitening is an option that can be very effective, but it can also be time consuming, messy and expensive. Additionally, while most products on the market are well regulated and safe, it never hurts to have a professional to assist you with whitening.

How Does Zoom! Whitening Work?

While preventive dentistry and practicing consistent oral hygiene are the best way to keep your teeth brilliant and white, overtime our teeth will likely still become discolored. That’s where whitening comes in to restore your smile to its natural luster. Zoom! Whitening was developed by Discus Dental. The leaders in take home whitening products, Discus Dental offers a scientifically formulated hydrogen peroxide gel. Activated by a special Zoom! light, the whitening gel is absorbed into the tooth enamel and can remove deep-set stains and discoloration in the dentin layer.

The process takes a little over an hour, and will leave your teeth at least six shades brighter. We’ll start by making sure your gums and lips will not interact with the whitening gel. Then, we’ll apply a coat of gel to your teeth. Once your teeth are evenly coated with the whitening gel, we’ll apply the Zoom! Whitening light for one hour. After the whitening period, you will receive a fluoride treatment to finish the process. Most patients report results lasting one or more years.

Dental Implants 101

You have probably heard about dental implants before, but do you really know what they are? When permanent teeth are lost, regardless of the reason or number of teeth, dental implants can offer a new lease on life. They are superior to other choices because they are solid, secure, and esthetic. Here’s a crazy stat: after nearly 35 years of use, they have a 90-95% proven success rate in appropriately chosen cases. Not only will you enjoy an enhanced smile, but also a more youthful appearance. Who doesn’t love that?

A dental implant restoration is commonly composed of a titanium material screw and a crown. Various small-diameter holes (depending on your situation) are drilled at toothless jaw sites in order to guide the titanium screw that holds a dental implant in place. From there, the implant is secured by way of minimal surgical techniques.

Recovery time can take upwards of six months, while the fitting and seating of the crown can take up to two months. It’s important to note that the timeframe depends on individual cases and treatments.
